MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Lt. Gov. Molly Gray, D-VT, has announced for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Gray’s looking to take U.S. Rep. Peter Welch, D-VT’s seat.

She first needs to secure the Democrat nomination if she is to become the party's candidate.

Welch announced last month he will run for U.S. Senate, following Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-VT’s retirement.

If elected to Congress, Gray will be the first woman in Vermont history to hold federal office.

She was sworn in as Vermont’s 82nd lieutenant governor just about a year ago.
