VT Trooper Dragged Down Interstate Behind Woman's Car, Police Say

An arrest warrant has been issued for Angela Birk, 40, of Newport, after she fled state police following a traffic stop.

ST. JOHNSBURY, VT — Vermont State Police are searching for a woman they say dragged a state trooper behind her car during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 this week.

State police are asking for the public's help in locating Angela Birk, 40, of Newport. According to police, Birk was pulled over for a minor traffic stop Wednesday night near mile marker 134 in St. Johnsbury.

After stopping for officers, police say Birk drove away, dragging Sgt. Matthew Tarricone behind the vehicle in the process. Tarricone was dragged for about 50 yards at a speed of roughly 20 mph before he was able to break free, police said.

Birk then proceeded to flee, passing several vehicles and weaving through traffic at excessive speeds, according to authorities. Police said she traveled from I-91 to Route 122 and finally to Route 114 before troopers lost sight of her car.

Tarricone sustained only minor scrapes and bruising, police said.

A warrant has been issued for Birk's arrest, police said. She is facing several charges including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
