MSNBC's 'Lockup' to Feature Fairfax Co. Adult Detention Center

'Lockup Extended Stay: Fairfax' will premiere on MSNBC starting Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m.

The Fairfax County Adult Detention Center will be featured on MSNBC’s prison documentary series Lockup: Extended Stay Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. The premiere kicks off a series of six one-hour episodes that will air on consecutive Saturday nights.

Produced by 44 Blue Productions, Lockup explores facilities across the country to share the stories of inmates and prison operations. The series filmed in Fairfax for 54 days over a 4-month period in 2013.

“What we hope viewers will learn about the Adult Detention Center is that we run a very safe and secure facility,” said Sheriff Stacey Kincaid. “We are strict but fair with inmates. Our jail is clean and relatively quiet. We provide round-the-clock medical care. And with the help of more than 300 volunteers, we offer programs that include impact of crime awareness, workplace skills, financial planning, anger management, spirituality and so much more.”

Approximately 22,000 people were booked into the Detention Center last year, which maintained an average daily population of 1,220. Inmates were admitted for charges ranging from trespassing and drunk-in-public to armed robbery, rape and murder, according to the detention center. The film crew was granted access to all levels of jail security and all styles of inmate housing.

All inmates who appear in the series volunteered and signed release forms.

“The Sheriff’s Office was diligent about maintaining the privacy of inmates who did not want to be on camera,” said Lt. Steve Elbert.
