ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington came in fourth place in a new ranking of the most Family-Friendly Cities in the nation, a ranking that focuses on jurisdictions that offer plenty of outdoor spaces and parks.

Online real estate platform Opendoor released its second annual Family-Friendly Cities list on Tuesday. Arlington dropped one slot from 2022, when it ranked third on the most Family-Friendly Cities list.

“Opendoor’s second annual Family-Friendly Cities list celebrates cities and towns, like Arlington, that are ahead of the curve by offering family-oriented programming and investing in outdoor spaces to promote a healthy way of living,” Jennifer Patchen, real estate broker for Opendoor, said in a statement Tuesday.

"While last year's list highlighted locales with a small-town feel and big city perks nearby, this year's list reflects families’ desire for community, simpler living, and an opportunity to build a network of like-minded families in green spaces — all of which Arlington embodies," Patchen said. "After all, 99% of Arlington residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park."

Ahead of Arlington in the ranking were Somerville, Massachusetts at No. 1, Berkeley, California at No. 2 and Cliffside Park, New Jersey at No. 3.

The rest of the top 10 were Watauga, Texas at No. 5, Chandler, Arizona at No. 6, Denver at No. 7, Portland, Oregon at No. 8, Valley Stream, New York at No. 9 and Garden Grove, California at No. 10.

The best cities for families are identified by analyzing and averaging the number of OpenStreetMap "family friendly" tags that are within three miles of all addresses in a city where Opendoor Brokerage operates. Tags include benches, community centers, drinking water, gardens, kindergartens, museums, parks, picnic sites, playgrounds, schools, swimming pools, and supermarkets, according to Opendoor.

"From outdoor movie nights and summer camps to pumpkin patches, farmers’ markets and splash pads, outdoor programming encourages communities to come together and be active," Opendoor said.
