Capital Bikeshare Coming to Gravelly Point, Roosevelt Island
The Arlington County Board approved an agreement with the National Park Service to allow Capital Bikeshare stations on park service land.
ARLINGTON, VA — The Arlington County Board approved an agreement with the National Park Service Tuesday to allow Capital Bikeshare stations to be located on park service land, notably at Gravelly Point and Theodore Roosevelt Island.
The Memorandum of Understanding will allow the County to install bikeshare stations at Gravelly Point and in the parking lot of Theodore Roosevelt Island, part of a planned and funded expansion of Capital Bikeshare’s network along the Mt. Vernon Trail.
The paved trail stretches 18 miles between Rosslyn and George Washington’s home at Mount Vernon.

“These bikeshare stations, when installed, will surely be well-used,” Arlington County Board Chair Katie Cristol said in a statement. “Both Gravelly Point and Theodore Roosevelt Island are favorite spots for Arlingtonians and visitors as they enjoy the Mt. Vernon Trail. Installing bikeshare stations at these spots also makes these National Parks Service resources more accessible, bringing nature and history closer to our residents.”
The County now has just one Capital Bikeshare station on National Park Service land, near the Iwo Jima Memorial in Rosslyn, just north of Arlington National Cemetery. The agreement is part of a new permitting process for placing Capital Bikeshare stations on National Park Service land.

The Board voted unanimously to approve the Memorandum of Understanding with the National Park Service.
The agreement sets out the County’s responsibilities for installing and maintaining CapitalBikeshare facilities on park service land, and ensures that the park service has no financial liability. The agreement also describes how the County and the park service will work together to site future Capital Bikeshare stations on National Park Service land.
With approval of this agreement, the County will move forward to procure the bikes and Bikeshare docks for these new stations. A schedule for installation at Gravelly Point and Theodore Roosevelt Island has not yet been determined.
