ARLINGTON, VA — A 27-year-old Gainesville man was arrested on drug-related and firearm charges after the vehicle he was attempting to escape in struck a fire hydrant in the Arna Valley area on Wednesday night, according to authorities.

Around 8:42 p.m., Arlington County police officers spotted a wanted suspect in the 2900 block of South Glebe Road. Seeing the officers, the suspect, later identified as Naim Arrak of Gainesville, tried to flee but instead crashed his vehicle into the hydrant, according to police. When Arrak tried to evade police on foot, he fell and received a minor injury. He was then taken into custody.

Investigators recovered a firearm and suspected narcotics. Arrak was arrested and charged with possession of Schedule I/II controlled substance, possession of firearm while in possession of drugs, possession of firearm by foreign alien, reckless handling of a firearm, obstruction of justice, carrying a concealed weapon, eluding, driving while suspended and hit and run: property damage, according to ACPD. Arrak was also served with outstanding warrants and then held without bond.

Arrak was scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. on Friday in Arlington General District Court, according to court records. A date for his preliminary hearing has yet to be set.

Arrak's most serious charges are the possession of Schedule I/II controlled substance and carrying a concealed weapon, which are Class 5 felonies. If convicted on either of these charges, he faces a mandatory sentence one to 10 years in prison, or confinement in jail for up to 12 months, along with a fine of up to $2,500, under the Code of Virginia.

The possession of firearm while in possession of drugs and the possession of a firearm by a foreign alien are Class 6 felonies, which are each punishable by one to five years in prison or up to 12 months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500, under Virginia law. The other charges are all misdemeanors.
