VIRGINIA — This week's good news stories in Northern Virginia include local winners of the Dunkin' college scholarship program, organizations receive thanks for their work during Pride Month in Fairfax County, and Vienna marching band alumni take their musicianship to the next level.

Plus, Call Your Mother Deli plans to move to a new location in Alexandria, the Mosaic District's farmers market is expanding to 60 farmers, and a Hallmark gift store holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Kingstowne.

Fairfax Board Honors Pride Month Organizers Amid Calls For Inclusivity

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recognized and thanked the many organizations and individuals who contributed to the celebration of Pride Month across the county in June. Board Chair Jeff McKay said he wanted to "make sure that the larger Fairfax County community knows how important this board feels inclusivity is and without condition that all people in this county are welcome, and all people in this county will be protected in order to be able to thrive."

Madison Band Alumni Earn Military Band Opportunities

Two alumni of the "Pride of Vienna" James Madison High School marching band program are taking their musicianship to new levels as they join military bands. Jonathan Farrington, a 2019 James Madison High School graduate and son of Trace the Zero Waste shop owner Mala Persaud, will join a band within the Royal Corps of Army Music. Another Madison graduate from 2020, Christina Alegre, is joining the Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, part of the U.S. Army Old Guard. Alegre is in the midst of bootcamp and will return to the D.C. area afterward.

Mosaic District's Farmers Market To Provide More Space For Vendors

The farmers market that attracts many visitors to the Mosaic District on Sundays will branch out further at the outdoor shopping center. Freshfarm, the market manager of the Mosaic Market, announced it will expand its farmers market starting on Aug. 6. The current market runs along District Avenue and will also expand onto the intersecting Strawberry Lane. The expansion will allow space to increase from 45 farmers and producers to nearly 60.

Call Your Mother Deli Plans New Location In Alexandria

Call Your Mother Deli, a popular bagel shop in the DC region, is having a second try at a location in Alexandria. The bagel shop filed a special use permit application Tuesday for 1300 King Street. According to the application, the deli will sell mostly bagels and coffee, along with other menu items and merchandise. Customers will be able to order at a front counter and take orders to go or for dine-in. There are 51 proposed seats indoors, including 34 table seats and 27 bar stools.

Nonprofit Gets Extension At Site Of Future Redevelopment In Alexandria

The Art League's classes won't be interrupted amid pending redevelopment of the Montgomery Center in Alexandria's Old Town North. As shared by the Old Town North Alliance, the Art Leaguehas secured a lease extension on its Montgomery Center space at 305 Madison Street through June 30, 2024. The nonprofit, which hosts some of its classes at the Madison Annex, will get to continue its summer, fall, winter and spring classes without interruptions.
