Northern Virginia and D.C. are under both a severe thunderstorm watch and a flood watch until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the NWS.

VIRGINIA/DC — Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. are under both a severe thunderstorm watch and a flood watch until 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

Strong storms packing frequent lightning, damaging hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph are possible for parts of Northern Virginia and D.C., according to the National Weather Service.

The strong storms on Tuesday are expected to be followed by a heat wave in the D.C. area, starting on Thursday, when temperatures could climb near 100 degrees.

For Tuesday, multiple rounds of thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon and evening. Where multiple thunderstorms occur, rainfall totals on the order of one to three inches are possible in a short period of time, according to the NWS.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.

"In this rapidly destabilizing atmosphere, we look for hit-or-miss instances of torrential rain and isolated pockets of flash flooding, intense lightning, large hail and damaging wind gusts," the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang said in its forecast for Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday afternoon, parts of D.C. and Maryland were hit by strong storms. The storm activity was mainly east of Interstate 95 and around the Chesapeake Bay.

For later on Tuesday, the main threats for parts of Northern Virginia and D.C. will be large hail, damaging winds, and isolated instances of flash flooding.

Storms are expected to develop near the Blue Ridge Mountain around 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday and move through the D.C. area between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., NBC4 reported.

Looking ahead, Wednesday should be dry, with high temperatures around 90. Temperatures will heat up on Thursday, with highs around 97, followed by highs of 99 on Friday and 98 on Saturday.

According to the NWS, heat index values may be between 105 and 110 during the afternoons of Thursday to Saturday. High index values are typically the result of high temperatures combined with humidity.
