Robbery Suspect Spits On Officer, Faces Possible Prison Sentence: ACPD

A D.C. woman who robbed a Pentagon City business by force spat on a police officer during her arrest, according to Arlington County police.

ARLINGTON, VA — A 29-year-old woman from Washington, D.C. was arrested Saturday night for robbery and spitting on a police officer in Pentagon City, according to authorities.

Officers responded around 9:06 p.m. for the report of a robbery by force at a business in the 1100 block of South Joyce Street, according to Arlington County police.

"Upon arrival, it was determined the female suspect entered the business, collected merchandise and attempted to exit the store without payment, during which she was confronted by loss prevention personnel," according to the incident report. "The suspect shoved loss prevention personnel before running from the scene."

After broadcasting a lookout, the responding officer located a woman matching the description of the suspect in the 1100 block of South Hayes Street. While the woman, identified as Maya Selmar Turner, was being taking into custody, she spat on an officer, according ACPD. Turner was arrested and charged with assault on police and robbery. She was then held without bond.

Turner was arraigned on Monday morning and has a bond hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning in Arlington General District Court, according to court records. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Oct. 15.

The assault on police charge is a Class 6 felony, which is punishable by a sentence of one to five years in state prison, or a maximum of 12 months in jail, along with fines of up to $2,500, under the Virginia Code.

The robbery with force charge is a Class 5 felony. If convicted on this charge, Turner faces a possible sentence of one to 10 years in prison or up to 12 months in jail, along with a fine of up to $2,500, under Virginia law.
