$1 Million Lottery Ticket Claimed By Sterling Man

A Sterling man recently gave his wife an early Valentine's Day present worth a million bucks, courtesy of the Virginia Lottery.

STERLING, VA—On his way home from shopping at the Food Lion at Briarcroft Plaza recently, Sterling resident Terry Mudd realized he'd forgotten something on his wife's grocery list. So he went back to the store, bought the item and also bought a Virginia Lottery ticket.

Later, when he scratched the "$30 Million Cash Out" ticket, Mudd saw he had won the game's $1 million top prize. He had planned to give it to his wife, Madonna, as a Valentine's Day gift. But one day they got into a squabble about finances, so he showed it to her early.

They chose a one-time cash option of $657,030 before taxes, and recently bought an RV. They told lottery officials they have no plans to retire but do plan to travel across the country.
