Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, College of Charleston
Occupation
I am not currently employed beyond serving on the School Board.
Family
I have been married for twenty-one years. My husband and I have two daughters. Our oldest just graduated from LCPS, and our youngest is currently a student at Potomac Falls High School.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government?
No
Previous public office positions or appointments
No
Why are you seeking this office?
I ran in 2023 to protect public education and ensure that our students get the tools they need to succeed academically and personally. As a school board member, I have worked to serve our Algonkian community and endeavored to put student needs at the heart of every decision. I am running for reelection to the school board because our students deserve an advocate and a champion who understands the importance of providing an excellent, free public school education to all students, regardless of circumstance.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidate(s) seeking this post?
I believe we can work together as school board members, parents, educators, and community members to drive student achievement and put all of our kids on the path to academic success and a brighter future.
What do you see as the top issues facing your locality, and how do you address them in your campaign platform?
Our division has just experienced a period of instability, with four superintendents serving in the span of about a decade. Since Dr. Spence came on board, we have worked to improve consistency and provide strong leadership across the division. We need to remain focused on these efforts, and the best way to do that is to elect candidates who are champions of public education and will work to focus on student achievement. Nothing is more important than providing the children in our community with innovative and transformative learning opportunities.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job?
As a School Board member, I have focused on providing results for our Algonkian community. Some accomplishments include passing a fully funded budget two years in a row, improving student outcomes and opportunities through programs such as the After School Activities pilot, Global Linguistics Program, Recovery School, and Transition Center, leading the unanimous passage of the Secure Gun Storage Notification Resolution, facilitating the end of Seclusion as a discipline practice, and expediting timelines for updating preschool and elementary playgrounds so that all students will have equal access to play areas.
What else would you like voters to know about yourself and your positions?
We should be focused on providing students with the resources they need to be successful; keeping them safe from the threat of gun violence and other safety concerns; fully funding our schools; paying teachers competitive salaries; and being responsible stewards of our community. Instead of seeking headlines for divisiveness, chaos and uncertainty, we should seek to do what is best for our students.
