Charles Jerome Smothers, 91, departed this life Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Heritage Hall in Leesburg, VA.
Charles was born in Burkittsville, MD, April 4, 1921, to the late Charles Jerome Smothers, Sr. and Emma Mae Grayson. He was preceded in death by one brother, three sisters and his common-law wife, Mary Catherine Marcellus.
Charles was a World War II veteran. He was employed by Helmi Carr at Fort Evans Farm as a caretaker for more than 40 years. He was also a part-time bartender. Charles was a member of the Old Friends Club and hosted many parties and functions. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching and listening to baseball, bowling and playing cards.

He is survived by one brother, James Smothers, and one sister, Estella Belt, of Brunswick, MD. Also left to mourn is a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 3 at Loudoun Funeral Chapel.
