Cancer Survivor Inspires Returning Blood Drive In Ashburn Village

A cancer survivor from Ashburn Village is inspiring the latest blood drive coming up to address blood supply needs over the summer.

ASHBURN, VA — The Ashburn Village community will again rally behind a resident who battled cancer with a blood drive on Saturday.

The blood drive in partnership with Inova Blood Donor Services will happen from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mills Recreation Center, 43895 Grottoes Drive, Ashburn, VA. The Inova Bloodmobile will be on site to facilitate blood donations. Residents can sign up to donate blood.

The blood drive is in honor of Ashley Littman, a wife and mother who received a leukemia diagnosis last year. She has since survived the cancer.

"Hosting a drive like this is one of the most meaningful ways a community can give back," said Nicholas Lilly, senior director at Inova Blood Donor Services. "Ashburn Village has shown what’s possible when HOAs take the lead—now we hope other neighborhoods across Loudoun will follow their example."

Last year, Littman's story drew strong support from the Ashburn Village homeowners association and neighbors for the blood drive. More than 70 units of blood were donated at the event, which Inova Blood Donor Services says is high for a community event. The blood drive provided blood units to cancer patients, trauma victims and other patients with urgent needs.

Blood supplies typically drop during the summer, according to Inova Blood Donor Services. The service typically needs 200 units of blood and blood components each day to serve patients. Inova Blood Donor Services encourages other homeowners associations and community organizations to host blood drives.
