Congressman Receives Threat At District Office In Loudoun County

The congressman who received a constituent threat in Loudoun County called for action in Congress to address political violence.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — A Democratic congressman representing Loudoun County reported a threat to his district office, marking another concern of political violence in recent weeks.

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Loudoun) said in a news release that a constituent threatened to bring a gun to the congressman's district office in Leesburg. WTOP reported that the threat happened over email in August, which was before the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk but after the assassinations of Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.

Subramanyam's office said the congressman and staff took legal action and boosted security at offices and public events featuring or sponsored by Subramanyam. WTOP indicated that a temporary protective order, sought to become permanent, is in place as well as security personnel.

"I am committed to ensuring that my office continues to be a safe space for constituents to get help or meet with me or my staff," said Subramanyam in a statement. "We have a zero-tolerance policy for any words or actions that may threaten the safety of my constituents, staff, or family. My team will continue to work with Capitol Police and local law enforcement to treat this and any other threats seriously and respond swiftly."

Subramanyam, whose 10th congressional district includes Loudoun County, had condemned political violence in a statement with other Virginia Democratic congressional representatives. According to WTOP, the congressman also called for a hearing in the House of Representatives to examine the causes of political violence and identify actions to address it. Subramanyam said congressional representatives have a responsibility to keep political rhetoric civil and condemn political violence regardless of party.
