STERLING, VA — A deteriorated bridge in the Sugarland Run neighborhood of Sterling will be closed "indefinitely" by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Algonkian District Supervisor Juli Briskman informed residents of the upcoming closure of the Thomas Avenue/Route 792 bridge over the Sugarland Run stream. VDOT expects to close the bridge on or around Friday, Aug. 30. The state agency made the decision after a safety inspection "due to significant deterioration." VDOT's bridge condition dashboard labels the Thomas Avenue bridge as in poor condition.

VDOT told the supervisor's office that the bridge will eventually be replaced, but construction may not begin until late 2027.

The bridge closure will not affect any homes. Properties off Thomas Avenue will continue to have access — from Lakeland Drive from the west and Algonkian Parkway from the east. However, traffic will not be able to continue across the bridge in both directions. A detour will be available via Lakeland Road, Route 7 and Algonkian Parkway.

Briskman's office plans to continue sharing updates about the bridge closure.
