Gas Leak At Loudoun County Recreation Center Secured After Evacuation

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue responded to a gas leak at the Claude Moore Recreation Center that prompted a building evacuation.

STERLING, VA — A gas leak prompted an evacuation at the Claude Moore Park Recreation Center in Sterling Wednesday morning.

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue had a hazmat team respond to secure the leak. The building was evacuated and closed temporarily. There were no reported injuries.

As of 10:53 a.m. Wednesday, the fire department said the gas leak was secured, and units were clearing the scene.

The recreation center was still experiencing a power outage Wednesday afternoon. As a result, Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services said Claude Moore Recreation Center is closing at 6 p.m. Wednesday and cancelling evening activities.

The fitness areas, the competition and leisure pools, spa and gymnasium were already closed to the public. The auxiliary portion of the building is remaining open until 6 p.m. for the Days Out Camp. Preschool and Days Out Camp programs are continuing as scheduled, but families were notified of the facility impact.
