Got Household Hazardous Waste? Disposal Event Planned Saturday

The county's next collection event for items that can't be tossed in with the trash scheduled May 18 in Sterling.

Loudoun County residents to bring their household hazardous waste HHW to a collection event from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at River Bend Middle School, 46240 Algonkian Parkway, in Sterling.

Acceptable HHW includes, but is not limited to:

  • fluorescent bulbs
  • household batteries
  • oil-based paints/stains/varnishes
  • paint thinners
  • metal polishes
  • rust removers
  • wood preservatives
  • furniture polish
  • waxes
  • pesticides/insecticides/herbicides
  • pool chemicals
  • old fuels including gas/oil mixes

Dispose of latex or water-based paints with your regular trash after allowing it to harden by mixing in mulch or kitty litter and allowing it to air-dry, or pouring it onto newspaper to dry. Latex paint may also be disposed of at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility for a fee.

Items following items are NOT accepted at the HHW event include (but can be taken to the county landfill, 21101 Evergreen Mills Road, in Leesburg):

  • used motor oil
  • antifreeze
  • automobile batteries
  • lead-acid batteries
  • propane tanks
