ASHBURN, VA — As many regional trash haulers no longer accept glass in recycling, there's a new option to recycle those items in Ashburn.

Loudoun County's glass recycling program will expand to a new location at the One Loudoun Park and Ride, 20360 Savin Hill Drive, Ashburn, VA. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

"I am pleased to see Loudoun County's glass recycling program expand," said Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis Randall in a statement. "Having these purple bins located throughout the county enables us to separate glass from other recyclable materials and lessens the amount of glass that is disposed of as waste. Increasing opportunities to recycle glass also helps Loudoun County meet our environmental goals."

At the glass recycling center, residents can recycle glass bottles and jars in the purple bin marked "glass recycling." Glass bottles and jars must be emptied out and have the lids, caps and corks removed. Items should be placed in the bin individually without bags.

The county's glass recycling program aims to decrease the amount of glass thrown out as trash due to some haulers no longer accepting glass in recycling. According to the county, putting glass with other recyclables requires additional processing at local facilities. The county's purple glass recycling bins collects glass bottles and jars, which are sent to facilities that recycle them to make new glass products.

The Board of Supervisors had directed the county to look into expanding glass recycling sites throughout the county. In 2022, the board accepted a proposal from Broad Run District Supervisor Sylvia Glass to add a glass recycling location in the 20147 Ashburn ZIP code.

"This new center provides a more convenient way for people in the Broad Run and Ashburn area to recycle glass now that they won’t have to drive to sites located farther away," said Glass in a statement. "I am hopeful it will also encourage more people in the community to recycle their glass bottles and jars."
