New “Redskins Facts” Website Supports Keeping Team’s Name

"Redskins Facts" features a brief history of the Redskins and testimonials from Native Americans who oppose changing the team's name.

A new website launched by supporters of the Washington Redskins name has allegedly drawn support from former players and fans.

Considered offensive to some Native Americans, the Redskins name remains the source of conflict among major Native American organizations, including the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and the Oneida Indian Nation, both of which have spoken out against the team’s name.

The website, RedskinsFacts.com, was created June 30, according to WJLA. The site features five video testimonials from Native Americans who say they support keeping the team’s name.

“We believe that the team’s name and logo represent the very best of the noble qualities exemplified by Native Americans, and we hope this website will continue to be a reference point for everyone with a vested interest in the future of the Washington Redskins’ identity,” the website states.

The site also includes a link to a Change.org petition to “Keep The Redskins’ Name,” which has collected 1,145 of 1,500 signatures listed as a goal. The petition will reportedly be sent to the NFL, the U.S. Congress, President Obama, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office revoked the Washington Redskins trademark in June, saying the name is “disparaging to Native Americans.” Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has repeatedly defended the name as a term of endearment and a “badge of honor.”
