N.Y. Daily News Sacks Washington Redskins Name and Logo
The news outlet announced Thursday it will deliberately no longer use the Redskins name or logo when writing about the Washington NFL team.

One of the nation’s largest newspapers announced Thursday it will henceforth forgo the use of the name Redskins and the team’s logo when writing about the Washington NFL franchise.
In an editorial entitled “Sack the name,” The New York Daily Daily News announced all stories will simply refer to the team, known as the Redskins since 1933, as Washington. In addition, the Redskins’ logo will be replaced with an alternative image that uses the team’s maroon and yellow colors.
“Why drop the term now?” The N.Y. Daily Post writes. “Why not yesterday or last year? The answer is that, as attitudes evolve, words can move from common parlance to unacceptable in good company.”

The news outlet joins other media outlets that have also dropped the name. The editorial board of The Washington Post announced in August the newspaper will no longer use the word “Redskins.” CBS analyst Phil Simms said he likely will avoid using the team’s nickname when handling Washington’s Week 4 game, The Associated Press reports.
A coalition of more than 100 Native American groups sent a letter Thursday to thousands of television and radio broadcasters in every city with an NFL team requesting they stop using the team’s name.
