The fire marshal's office determined the fire was caused by a failure of an extension cord or receptacle on a side wall. The fire department urged residents to follow manufacturer instructions when using extension cords, inspect and replace when frayed or worn, avoid overloading extension cords, and have an electrician check the electric box and wiring to make repairs.

Fire units from Sterling, Kincora, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire & Rescue Department and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department contributed to the response.
