ASHBURN, VA — The Loudoun County School Board has decided to extend Superintendent Aaron Spence's contract by another year after an annual review.

The contract extension runs through June 20, 2029. Under the contract, Spence receives an annual salary increase equal to the average cost-of-living adjustment and average step increase provided to all Loudoun County Public Schools employees if he receives at least a proficient performance rating from the school board. The school board approved an increase in deferred pay due under his contract to $32,500 for the 2026-2026 school year.

Spence originally had a $375,000 salary when he came to LCPS in the 2023-2024 school year and now earns $425,334, according to Loudoun Now.

"Dr. Spence brings a clear focus on belonging, educational goals, and meaningful opportunities for all students," said School Board Chair Melinda Mansfield in a statement. "From the launch of Think Big Corners, bringing hands-on STEM learning to our elementary schools, to the creation of future-focused programs like the ACCESS Academy with George Mason University and the proposed Global and Linguistic Studies Academy at Dominion High School, he is working with the Board, staff, families and community partners to expand opportunity and reimagine what’s possible for every learner. His leadership inspires confidence, creates momentum, and reflects the values of Loudoun County."

According to LCPS, Spence led the district in exceeding state averages for Standards of Learning, Advanced Placement testing and on-time graduation rates and opened the new Henrietta Lacks Elementary School and Watson Mountain Middle School. However, LCPS has recently faced controversy with its investigation into a transgender student boys locker room incident, which led Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares to refer his investigation to the feds.

Other highlights of the superintendent's leadership over the last year included planning a Recovery School and Transition Center, launching the first LCPS Workforce Summit and the LCPS Family Academy, and hosting the first One LCPS Celebration Day.

"It has been a privilege to lead Loudoun County Public Schools over the past two years," said Spence in a statement. "I’m deeply grateful to the LCPS community—our families, staff, and partners—for their support and commitment to our shared mission. While we’ve accomplished a great deal together, there is still important work ahead."
