Thousands Lose Power in Ashburn After Pole Catches Fire Monday

Most customers' service was restored quickly, but some waited until early Tuesday for the lights to come on; lightning is suspected.

The storm that blew threw Northern Virginia Monday night doused 5,240 Ashburn homes and businesses in darkness, according to Dominion Virginia Power, and lightning is the primary suspect.

“There was a pole that caught fire,” said Dominion spokeswoman Le-Ha Anderson. “There was lightning in the area.”

Anderson said that Dominion had replaced the pole and would conduct a full investigation to make sure there was not another cause.
