Trial Set For Commanders Player Fighting Reckless Driving Conviction

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Washington Commanders linebacker Jamin Davis will appear before a jury in March 2024 as he contests a reckless driving conviction in Loudoun County.

In 2022, a judge convicted Davis of one count of reckless driving for speeding 114 mph in a 45 mph zone. Davis had pleaded not guilty. He was sentenced to 30 days in prison, according to court records.

In Virginia, reckless driving is a class one misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in prison.

Davis appealed the conviction, taking the case from Loudoun's general district court to the county's circuit court for a jury trial.

In a news release in August, Commonwealth's Attorney Buta Biberaj said most juries in reckless driving cases return a fine-only sentence without any jail time.

"With each jury, we are informed of the community standards and stance on certain behaviors," Biberaj said. "The most recent such case resulted in a finding of guilty for reckless driving by speed, driving 111 mph in a 55-mph zone, and a punishment of a fine of $1,800 – no jail. These results are part of the factors taken into consideration when we consider resolutions."

On Monday, Davis tried to enter a guilty plea that he had negotiated with prosecutors. The judge rejected his plea, citing Davis's driving record and the area he was speeding in, according to the Washington Post.

In December 2021, Davis was charged with reckless driving for going 89 mph in a 65 mph zone, court records show. The charge was reduced to a traffic infraction, and Davis paid a $150 fine.

Davis's attorney, Mark Dycio, declined Patch's request for comment, citing the ongoing nature of the case.

"We encourage everyone to drive safely and follow the laws so that we ensure that we are all safe on our streets," Biberaj said in a news release last week. "We appreciate the hard work of our law enforcement partners in keeping our community safe, and our assistant commonwealth’s attorneys for their diligence."

Davis started for the Commanders in their season opening win on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. He recorded 6 total tackles in front of a sell-out crowd at FedEx Field.
