VA House 30th District Election 2025: McAuliff Clains Win In Flipping Seat

In the 30th House District in parts of Loudoun and Fauquier, Democratic challenger John McAuliff claimed victory over Del. Geary Higgins.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA — Democratic challenger John McAuliff claimed victory against Republican Del. Geary Higgins in Virginia's competitive 30th House District race. Based on unofficial election results, that win flips the seat for the Democrats.

With all 28 precincts fully reporting, McAuliff has 51.41 percent of votes and Higgins has 48.44 percent. Results are unofficial until certified by the State Board of Elections.

McAuliff claimed victory by resharing a Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee tweet on flipping the 30th House District seat.

"John is ready to fight for his constituents on issues ranging from reproductive freedom to farmland preservation, ensuring Virginia is a thriving place for all," the committee shared on X.

Other Democrats won Virginia House races in Loudoun County — incumbent Del. JJ Singh in the 26th District, incumbent Del. Atoosa Reaser in the 27th District, incumbent Del. David Reid in the 28th District and incumbent Del. Fernando "Marty" Martinez in the 29th District.

In the 30th District, Republican Del. Higgins ran against Democratic challenger McAuliff. The Virginia Public Access Project labels the district as leaning Republican. It includes part of Loudoun and Fauquier counties.

Higgins is a former Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and Loudoun County School Board member. His campaign website lists first term priorities like passing a bill for schools to notify parents within 24 hours of opioid overdoses and fighting new transmission line right-of-way.

His campaign website outlines priorities like conservation, parental rights, school and public safety,supporting the business environment, addressing cost of living and opposing abortion.

McAuliff is a bed and breakfast owner who previously worked as a chief of staff to Del. David Reid. His campaign has outlined priorities like helping first-time homebuyers, fighting data center sprawl, preserving farmland, promoting sustainable energy, funding mental health care programs, protecting reproductive and human rights, fighting the rising cost of higher education, and supporting small businesses.

All 100 House of Delegates seats are up for grabs in the Nov. 4, 2025 election. The Virginia House and Senate are both Democrat-controlled, while Gov. Glenn Youngkin is Republican. The new election will determine what parties will earn control of the Virginia House and governorship.

Other items on the ballot for Loudoun County voters were governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general, other Virginia House of Delegates races, five Loudoun County School Board seats, Towns of Middleburg and Round Hill elections, and Loudoun County bond questions on school projects, parks and recreation and public safety projects, and transportation projects.
