Blacksburg is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Blacksburg has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • The town of Blacksburg was named after its founder, William Black. In 1797, William Black laid out the original 16 blocks that would become Blacksburg, a town now bustling with history and modernity alike.
  • Blacksburg is home to the Hahn Horticulture Garden, nestled within Virginia Tech's campus. This six-acre garden is a living tapestry of colorful plant collections, water gardens and shade gardens, providing a serene spot for community events, workshops and simply enjoying the beauty of nature.
  • Every spring, Blacksburg hosts the International Street Fair and Parade, entering its 63rd year in 2024. This vibrant event showcases the town's diverse community, featuring cultural performances, international foods and crafts.
  • The Lyric Theatre is a window to Blacksburg's past and present. Originally opened in 1930, this historic cinema not only shows films but also serves as a gathering place for community events, keeping the arts alive and well in downtown Blacksburg.
  • Blacksburg is part of the Smart Road, an advanced testing ground in Virginia for vehicle technologies. This futuristic road, operated by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, is where cutting-edge automotive technologies are tested, including automated vehicles.
