Here are the top three stories today in Blacksburg:

  1. Former longtime 9th District Representative Rick Boucher has donated his political records spanning four decades to Virginia Tech's University Libraries. The collection, consisting of 76 boxes, includes folders, awards, photos, and other materials documenting Boucher's political career. Boucher, the longest-serving representative in the history of the 9th District, chose Virginia Tech due to his longstanding association with the institution and its technical expertise. A digital exhibit showcasing a selection of over 200 items from the collection is available online, with plans to add more digital content in the future. (Martinsville Bulletin)
  2. The Blacksburg Bruins emerged as champions in both the boys' and girls' team titles at the Cosmopolitan Invitational track meet held at William Fleming High School. The boys' team won with 75 points, while the girls' team dominated with 120 points. Isaiah Moorman of Franklin County had a standout performance, winning the boys' 100-meter dash, and 200-meter dash, and being part of the winning 4x100 relay team. Mia Littlejohn of Blacksburg achieved dominant wins in the girls' 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. The meet showcased the dedication, hard work, and pursuit of excellence among the participants. 3. The Roanoke Regional Small Business Development Center has opened an office in the Montgomery Museum of Art and History in nearby Christiansburg. The partnership aims to provide easier access to resources for businesses in the New River Valley. Small businesses can benefit from free resources, training, and confidential business advice at the office. The expansion aligns with the museum's strategic plan to create an arts and business incubator space. (WDBJ)
  4. A structure fire occurred in the Riner area of Montgomery County. The incident involved a trailer engulfed in heavy flames. The fire departments, including Riner Volunteer Fire Department and Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene and brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. From my notebook:

  • The Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department personnel had an amazing day of training this weekend thanks to the dedicated volunteers, sponsors like Toranze Lee, and Iron Peddlers for providing the location. The hands-on experience with our truck equipment at Blacksburg Fire Department, guided by excellent instructors, offered unique challenges, as showcased in the accompanying photos. • The Rotary Club of Blacksburg awarded fine arts scholarships to three talented young women: Kelsie Groseclose from Auburn HS, who will study Studio Art at Concord College; Abrigail Plummer from Blacksburg HS, who will pursue dance at VCU; and Adalyn Williams from Christiansburg HS, who will study biomedical engineering with a minor in fine arts at BYU.
