Braddock Road Improvements To Be Discussed At Virtual VDOT Meeting

VDOT is holding a virtual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to discuss proposed upgrades along Braddock Road between Burke and Annandale.

BURKE, VA — The Virginia Department of Transportation is holding a virtual meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to discuss its preferred plans for upgrades at certain intersections along Braddock Road between Burke and Annandale.

VDOT’s project team will provide an overview of work to date on the project and will share information specifically about the preferred changes at Braddock Road’s intersections with Rolling Road, Burke Lake Road and Danbury Forest Drive/Wakefield Chapel Road.

The goal of the overall construction project is to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety. Plans call for improved mobility and accessibility for all users with intersection and interchange enhancements, new and upgraded shared-use paths along both sides of Braddock Road, and a potential pedestrian overpass just west of Burke Lake Road.

This project also will include access management improvements to the eastbound and westbound Braddock Road ramps to southbound I-495 and a half-mile of Ravensworth Road between Braddock Road and Heritage Drive.

Braddock Road averages about 61,000 vehicles a day along the project segment — between Humphries Drive in Burke and Ravensworth Road in Annandale. VDOT has yet to release a cost estimate of the project.

Under current plans, the project’s right of way and construction will be performed in two phases: Braddock Road from Southampton Drive to Ravensworth Road, and Ravensworth Road from Braddock Road to Heritage Drive (Phase 1); and Braddock Road from Humphries Drive to Southampton Drive (Phase 2).

Phase 1 is fully funded and Phase 2 is partially funded, according to VDOT. The project is financed with federal, state and local funding.

VDOT held its first virtual public information meeting for the Braddock Road project in January.

For the second virtual public information meeting on Nov. 29, the project team will make a short presentation beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer period for about an hour after the presentation.

The public can register for the Nov. 29 meeting at virginiadot.org/BraddockMultimodal. To participate without registering in listen-only mode, the public can call 877-309-2071 and use access code 254-339-858.

The public is invited to submit comments about the Braddock Road project via an online comment form or by email to meetingcomments@vdot.virginia.gov. Comments also can be mailed to Mr. W. Calvin Britt, P.E., Virginia Department of Transportation, 4975 Alliance Drive, Fairfax, VA 22030. The deadline for the public to submit comments is Dec. 14.

VDOT expects to complete the design of the project by spring 2023.
