As I prepared for my second (and hopefully last!) surgery last week, I reflected on my cancer journey. My journey began in April 2022 as it became clear that one of my co-workers, Captain Kim Schoppa, was nearing the end of her cancer journey.
Schoppa was a friend and one of the strongest, most determined, firefighters with whom I’ve worked! Her battle with cancer led me to participate in a voluntary cancer screening offered through our union, Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Local 2068. Schoppa’s battle ended on April 26, 2022, and I had the honor of serving on the planning team for her funeral service.
Being immersed in the worst possible outcome of cancer, my family and I were shocked when the results of my screening revealed suspicious nodules on my thyroid! An appointment with my primary care physician led to an ultrasound that confirmed the suspicious nodules. This was followed by a fine needle biopsy, which confirmed our fear that the nodules were cancerous. Worse, the cancer had already spread into the lymph nodes on both sides of my neck.
My first surgery on Dec. 5, 2022, was successful in removing my thyroid and right lymph nodes. My second surgery on Jan. 6, 2023, removed the left side lymph nodes. With this surgery behind me, I will begin working toward my recovery, so I can be ready for radiation treatment in the coming months.
My family and I are so appreciative of the support we’ve received from my co-workers, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Local 2068, the Firefighter’s Cancer Support Network, and the community! We especially want to thank the strong support network among those of us facing cancer in the department!
