SPRINGFIELD, VA — Fairfax County officials participated in a ribbon-cutting on Thursday to celebrate the construction of a new playground at Lake Accotink Park.

Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw, who asked the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors earlier this year to provide funds for a new playground, was joined by Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay, Springfield District Supervisor Pat Herrity and Fairfax County Park Authority officials to celebrate the completion of the new playground.

Walkinshaw thanked the Parks Authority for designing, ordering and installing the new playground "in record time."

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted in May to approve $300,000 in funding for the Fairfax County Park Authority to replace the playground at Lake Accotink Park as part of the board’s third quarter review of funding adjustments to its budget.

Due to safety concerns, the old playground equipment at Lake Accotink Park was removed in early May. The playground was installed in 1995 and had been closed since November 2022 due to equipment damage. The playground could not be repaired because the original equipment vendor is no longer in business, according to the county.
