West Springfield Intersection Improvements Complete: VDOT

WEST SPRINGFIELD, VA — Improvements are complete at the Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill Road intersection in West Springfield, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

In terms of road configuration, the intersection now as a second left-turn lane to westbound Old Keene Mill Road and dedicated right-turn lane to eastbound Old Keene Mill Road. Other improvements include striping four higher-visibility crosswalks, replacing pedestrian signals with ADA compliant and accessible ones, replacing the traffic signal to accommodate the new turn lanes and reconstructing the median along Rolling Road just south of Old Keene Mill Road.

Work began in February on the improvements, designed to boost traffic flow and safety. This area sees about 25,000 vehicles per day on Rolling Road and 35,000 on Old Keene Mill Road, according to 2019 data.

Final detail work will happen in the coming weeks with little traffic impacts. The project cost $2.5 million through state and Fairfax County funds.

A longer-term project will be widening Rolling Road from two to four lanes between Viola Street and Old Keene Mill Road. A shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists is also in the plans. The project is in design, and construction could begin in early 2024.
