Drug Bust Nets Shields Officer of the Quarter Award

After arresting a drug dealer in Westone Plaza on Dec. 26, Pfc. Joseph Shields was selected as the Sully district station's Officer of the Quarter.

Shields and another officer had pulled into a Sunoco gas station behind a Toyota Corolla. Shields noticed an expired inspection sticker on the car, and asked the driver to roll down his window so that he could tell him about it. Shields smelled marijuana coming from the car and told the driver to step out. The driver had huge lumps of cash inside his jacket and the officers took him and two other people riding in the car into custody.

In all, Fairfax County police confiscated $6,025, one pound and 11 ounces of marijuana, two large bags of hallucinogenic mushrooms packaged for sale, and information on the driver's distribution network.
