National Honor Society Inductions at Centreville High School

In late November, the Centreville High School Chapter of the National Honor Society welcomed 208 new inductees into their membership.  In a ceremony emceed by NHS Faculty Advisor and Social Studies teacher Jonathan Rutz, each of the CVHS chapter's student officers presented remarks on the four cornerstones of NHS membership - Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Character - before the newest NHS members walked across the stage in the Skip Maiden Theatre to receive their certificates of membership and congratulatory handshakes from Director of Student Services Gail Reynolds and Principal Mike Campbell.  The ceremony was followed by a reception in the high school's atrium for the new members and their guests.

To be considered for membership, students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and be in grades 10, 11 or 12.  Centreville HS has more than 500 students in its chapter.  In addition to maintaining their high GPA's through the school year, students are expected to provide 10 hours of community service as part of their NHS membership, 5 of which need to be in school.  At the end of every school year, the CVHS NHS hosts the "Scholars' Dinner" for senior members who have earned a 4.0 GPA; qualifying students are allowed to bring two family members and a favorite teacher as their guests to this prestigious event.

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the four areas mentioned above:  Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS.  Chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
