Bull Run Elementary Students Win State Chess Championship
Team captures K-5 award at the 2012 Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships.

Members of the Chess Club, led by fourth grade student Eli Kirtley—who won the individual K-5 trophy—captured the K-5 Team Award at the 2012 Virginia Scholastic Chess Championships.
In addition to Kirtley, winning team members were:
- Neha Pattanaik
- Maggie Luo
- Vedant Balu
- Charlie Gunn
- Suchet Sapre
- Charles Tai
- Chetan Alla
- Tvisha Subhasish,
- Jay Sharma
- Noah Laythe
- Andrew Minh-quan Vo
- Ray Wang.
Other local students competed in the chess championships, held March 17 and 18 at the Best Western Tysons Westpark Hotel in McLean. Students from Greenbriar West took the second place trophy in the K-5 section. The second place finisher in the individual competition was Pranav Karthik of Greenbriar West Elementary School.

In the K-8 section, the team from Rocky Run Middle School won second place.
