These Beloved Retailers Permanently Closed In VA In 2025

Throughout the year, several retailers and chains announced plans to close or potentially close Virginia locations. See the full list.

Store closures surged across the country in 2025 as dozens of brands shut down brick-and-mortar locations, including many in Virginia.

According to CoreSight Research, retailers across multiple sectors announced 67 percent more store closures in 2025 than in the previous year, caused mainly by rising operating costs and the continued growth of e-commerce.

Retailer At Home To Shutter VA Store This Month

At Home entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June and said at the time that it planned to close up to 26 stores before the end of September. Included on the list of closures was the company's Manassas location.

Big Lots Bankruptcy: These VA Stores Likely Doomed

Big Lots held on during bankruptcy after getting a lifeline from Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, which saved between 200 and 400 stores from full liquidation. However, the new owners planned to sell the leases to 480 stores, according to Business Insider, including nine of the discount retailer chain's 32 Virginia locations.

Carter's, National Retailer With 20 VA Locations, Closing 150 Stores

A national retailer with nearly two dozen locations in Virginia has announced it will be shuttering 150 of its stores nationwide. Carter's, North America's largest apparel company exclusively for babies and young children, made the announcement on Monday. In a statement, CEO Douglas Palladini said that elevated product costs, in part due to the impact of higher tariffs, have cut into the company's profitability.

Popular Retail Chain Claire's Closing 6 Virginia Locations

Claire’s filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this summer. The retailer planned to close 700 stores and was considering liquidating its entire 1,500-store footprint in North America. However, when a private equity firm acquired Claire’s assets, the liquidation plan was paused for about half of the stores. In Virginia, six stores were closed.

Dollar General Closing Dozens Of Stores: What It Means For VA Shoppers

Dollar General planned to close nearly 100 stores and 45 Popshelf stores nationwide by year’s end. The stores represent less than 1 percent of the company’s overall store base, and some Popshelf stores will be converted to Dollar General locations. Dollar General operates nearly 500 stores in Virginia.

Forever 21 Bankruptcy: What It Means For 9 VA Stores

Fast-fashion retailer Forever 21 closed 356 U.S. stores, citing overseas competition, rising costs and other economic challenges in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition. International stores were not affected. Forever 21 operated nine locations in Virginia that were impacted by the closures.

Harris Teeter Will Be Closing 3 NoVA Grocery Store Locations: Reports

Harris Teeter said it was closing three of its stores in Northern Virginia, including two in Arlington County, according to media reports. The grocery chain owned by Kroger is closing its stores at 950 S. George Mason Drive and 3600 S. Glebe Road in Arlington, as well as the Tysons Corner location at 200 Crestwood Heights Drive in McLean in late July.

2 VA JCPenney Stores Sold In Nearly $1B Deal

JCPenney closed eight stores in May, calling them “isolated” closures that did not signal a reduction in the venerable department chain’s store count. In July, two Virginia stores were among 119 stores sold to a Boston private equity firm in a nearly $1 billion deal.

Joann Fabrics To Close 20 Remaining Locations In Virginia: See List

The last Joann fabric stores closed in May; however, one of the retailer’s biggest rivals, Michaels, bought some of the company's private label brands and intellectual property. All 20 Joann locations in Virginia were closed.

Kroger To Close 60 Locations, Including 2 In VA

Grocery giant Kroger is joining a long list of retailers closing stores this year as it prepares to shutter 60 locations nationwide, including two in Virginia. In its first quarter earnings report, Kroger said the stores will close over the next 18 months. As a result of the closures, the company said it expects a "modest financial benefit."

Herndon Kohl’s Among 27 ‘Underperforming’ Stores Closing By April

Kohl’s planned to close 27 of its 1,500 stores nationwide due to performance issues, as well as an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, ChainStoreAge reported. Among the closures was a Kohl's location in Herndon.

Party City To Close All Stores: Report

Party City closed for good this year, Patch previously reported. This included 21 locations in Virginia.

Pharmacy Chain Rite Aid Closes: What It Means For VA Customers

Rite Aid closed roughly 1,250 stores, selling most to rival pharmacy chains. The company's last remaining Virginia stores closed in October, five months after the company declared its second bankruptcy in two years. Before its first bankruptcy in 2023, Rite Aid had about 65 Virginia locations.

Banking Giant To Shut Down 2 NoVA Branches: What To Know

TD Bank, one of the largest financial institutions in the United States, will close dozens of locations along the East Coast, the firm announced Monday. All told, TD will close 51 branches in 12 states and Washington, D.C., they said. That includes four bank locations in the greater DC-Maryland-Northern Virginia area.

VA Retailer Files For Bankruptcy, 38 Stores Affected

The companies behind Banners Hallmark Shop, which operates 38 Hallmark-licensed retail stores across Virginia, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September, according to court documents.
