Chess Team Takes State Championship Title

Greenbriar West Elementary School team traveled to Yorktown, VA to compete for the state championship.

Chess players from Greenbriar West Elementary School recently brought home trophies from the Virginia State Scholastic Championships—for the fifth year in a row. 

Over a three-day period, the 25 students competed in Yorktown, Virginia, among hundreds of young players from around the state.The team won won both the K-3 and K-5 State Championship titles. In the middle school section, the Greenbriar West team won sixth place. 

There were also some notable individual achievements. Fifth graders Alvin Cao and William Sun tied for first place.

But this isn't the last stop for the team: some of the players will go on to compete in the 2011 National Elementary Championship Competition soon. 

Greenbriar West K-3 Team: Andrew Wang, Vivian Cao-Dao, Aasa Dommalapati, Ryan Xu, Revanth Vejju, Rishabh Misra, Atharva Patil, Siddharth Dhumne and Kaavya Karthik.

Greenbriar West K-5 Team: Alvin Cao, William Sun, Yuyang Wang, Rahil Shah, William Li, Diego Gutierrez, Pranav Karthik, Ashish Tondwalkar, Sadhana Suri, Mahati Malladi, Navya Gudimetla and Adityasai Koneru.

Greenbriar West K-8 Team:  Tanmay Khattar, Abhinay Dommalapati, Jonathan Cao and Mason Lee.
