March 15, 2011

  1. Flags are at half-staff at the  and around the country today, as the nation honors a generation. Frank Buckles, the last World War I veteran, recently passed away at the age of 110 and will be buried today in Arlington National Cemetery. An ambulance driver in Europe who enlisted in the Army at age 16, Buckles also spent time in a prisoner of war camp during World War II.
  2. Miss Supervisor Frey's town hall meeting yesterday? No worries, we'll have a recap on Patch later today, and you can also attend the tonight, where Frey will discuss the 2012 budget.
  3. Fairfax County deputies are paying their respects today to Cameron Neil Justus and William Ezra Stiltner, the two Buchanan County deputies who died in the line of duty on March 13. Fairfax deputies have placed a black band around their badges, by order of Sheriff Stan Barry.
  4. We've reported extensively on the Fairfax County USAR team helping with search and rescue efforts in Japan. The team arrived safely in Sumita Monday night and planned to begin work first thing in the morning (by the time you read this, they will already have put in a full day's work). You can help too; check out Patch's providing relief to the victims of the tsunami and earthquake.
  5. Today there will be a statewide tornado drill at 9:45 a.m. Last week there was a tornado warning due to a violent storm based right here in Centreville. It knocked down anywhere from 12 to 20 trees in Sully Station, according to the National Weather Service. and could easily have escalated; yet despite the warning, many people were out in their cars or did not move to a secure location in their homes. Public officials recommend preparation and participation in the drill
