How Centreville Voted on Super Tuesday

Low turnout; local voters by and large went for Mitt Romney.

One vote could have broken the tie between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. That is, the 7-7 vote tie in Centreville's London Towne #2 precinct.

The tie was symptomatic of the lackluster voter participation on Super Tuesday throughout Virginia. The 14 votes represented just 2 percent of the total voters in the London Towne #2 precinct. Political observers , due in large part to the fact that the other two candidates (who are also Fairfax County residents), Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, did not appear on the Virginia ballot.

Just 5.6 percent of Sully District voters cast a ballot on Tuesday, under the countywide total of 6.4 percent participation. As Andrew Gibbs wrote on the Centreville Patch Facebook wall, "Welcome to Why Bother Tuesday."

Of those who did vote, not all were in search of a perfect candidate.

"I voted for Ron Paul, because we don't need another four years of the same thing we've had for the past twelve years," Brian Ziman wrote. "Some of Paul's ideas are a little crazy, but not nearly as crazy as continuing to sell the country to the highest bidder, waging useless wars of aggression that are simply a means of extracting money from American taxpayers and giving them to the wealthy elite that control oil and defense."

Results were similar in most other Fairfax County precincts.
