Moms Talk Q&A: A Government Shutdown?

Are you talking to your kids about what's going on with the government?

Today's elementary  and middle school students are not old enough to remember the last time a government shutdown occurred, in the mid-90s. Even some of my friends, now in their mid-20s, never really realized that the government could just close for business.

But the events occurring over the past few days seem like a great opportunity for parents and teachers to explain a valuable civics lesson. Are you talking to your kids about the shutdown that looks more and more likely every day? If so, how did you explain it to them?

More importantly, if this shutdown does come to pass, will it affect your family? There are about $143,000 federal employees in Virginia. Those in Fairfax County alone may lose well over $1.5 million in salary per day, and that he does not expect Congress to approve back pay this time.
