Two Dozen Centreville-Based Nonprofits Lose Tax-Exempt Status

Exemptions revoked because they did not file tax returns.

Two dozen Centreville-based nonprofits recently lost their tax-exempt status.

The nonprofits were among 275,000 groups in the United States whose tax exemptions were automatically revoked in June because they did not file a tax return.

The New York Times reported that many of the organizations are likely defunct, but there may be some small nonprofits who simply never heard about changes in the tax laws. Beginning in 2010, nonprofits making less than $25,000 annually were required to start filing returns.
