Giant Food Announces 6th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest to Celebrate 2012 Black History Month

Giant Food of Landover, Md. has announced it is now accepting submissions in its Black History Month Essay Contest. The sixth annual contest will commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Winners will be announced during the national observance of Black History Month in February 2012.  The essay contest is in support of Dr. King’s vision to join together people from all walks of life, races, and backgrounds for the common good.

Students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades attending schools in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. are invited to enter the essay contest provided they comply with all criteria listed in the essay contest rules and guidelines described online at www.giantfood.com.   The essay should address the following theme: “Making a difference – What can you do to help fight hunger in your community?”  

Each submission will be judged on basis of originality, creativity and adherence to the essay topic. Two winners will be selected from every grade level and each winner will receive a cash award.  Students must submit their application package consisting of an entry form and their original essay via the U.S. Postal Service and be postmarked no later than December 31, 2011. The goals of the essay contest are to increase knowledge and awareness about the importance of volunteerism and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and to inspire youth to consider their individual role in building character and community involvement.
