National Aquarium Shuttered
The move comes as renovations are scheduled to begin next year on the Commerce Department building.
A loggerhead turtle, along with its fellow sharks, eels, alligator, fish and other thousands of other animals are preparing to move out of downtown Washington, DC.
The National Aquarium, a long-time family favorite of metro area residents and visitors, shut down Monday due to renovations at the Department of Commerce building where it’s housed.
The General Services Administration requires that the National Aquarium vacate its current space at 1401 Constitution Ave., NW by March 2014.
The collection of more than 2,500 animals is being moved to the National Aquarium in Baltimore or other accredited institutions, according to a statement on the National Aquarium’s website.

The National Aquarium has been housed at the Commerce Department building since 1932.
The National Aquarium is currently considering plans to return to Washington, DC in some form and has enlisted partners Studio Gang Architects and IMPACTS Research & Development to help it along the way.
