Operation: Dark Skies Illuminated Light Pollution Awareness in Northern Virginia

Ellanor C. Lawrence Park Event Educates about the Artificial Light Concerns

Local communities were invited to look up and learn about the growing issue of light pollution at "Operation: Dark Skies," a free, family-friendly event designed to bring together science, education, and fun under the night sky. Hosted collaboratively by Mission Green Global, DarkSky NOVA, and Dark Sky Friends, this event raised critical awareness about the impact of artificial light on our environment, health, and ability to see the stars this past weekend during "Operation: Dark Skies" that was held at the Stewardship Education Center (SEC) @ Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Chantilly, Virginia. Go to www.darkskyfriends.org.

The event was an engaging experience for all ages, featuring a variety of activities including powerful telescopes for stargazing, hands-on kids' activities, informative educational tables, delicious treats, and engaging games.

Attendees had the unique opportunity to hear from a distinguished lineup of speakers representing leading organizations in astronomy and environmental science. Experts from Dark Sky Friends, Dark Sky Northern Virginia, NOVAC (Northern Virginia Astronomy Club), NVBA (Northern Virginia Bird Alliance), NASA, DarkSky International, George Mason University Astrophysics, and more shared insights into the importance of dark skies and practical steps individuals can take to reduce light pollution.
