2020 U.S. Census Results: The Changing Demographics Of Dale City

The 2020 census shows an America that is becoming more diverse, with the Hispanic/Latino population growing faster than any other.

DALE CITY, VA — The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic/Latino community.

These changes were clearly reflected in the already diverse population of Dale City. In Dale City, the white population shrunk by more than 25 percent while the Hispanic population grew by nearly 50 percent.

The Hispanic boom accounted for almost half of the overall U.S. population growth, which was the slowest since the Great Depression. By comparison, the non-Hispanic growth rate over the decade was 4.3 percent. The Hispanic share of the U.S. population grew to 18.7 percent of the U.S. population, up from 16.3 percent in 2010.

The share of the white population fell from 63.7 percent in 2010 to 57.8 percent in 2020, the lowest on record, driven by falling birthrates among white women compared with Hispanic and Asian women. The number of non-Hispanic white people shrank from 196 million in 2010 to 191 million.

In total, Dale City's white population tumbled by 25.91 percent to 16,490. The area's white population is now the third-largest ethnic group behind Black and Hispanic residents. Across Virginia, the white population fell by 277,996 people, or just over 5 percent of 2010's number.

Meanwhile, Dale City's Hispanic population grew significantly. Since 2010, the area's Hispanic population grew by 48.51 percent to 26,209 people. Hispanic people now represent Dale City's largest ethnic group.

The number of Black residents in the area did not grow or shrink too significantly, according to the census data. Dale City's Black population decreased by 6.6 percent 17,026 people.

Asians in Dale City experienced the largest percentage change in population for any ethnicity in the area. The Asian population grew by 63.35 percent to 8,037.
