Alexandria Animal Control Report: Avian Dilemmas

A glance at some recent incidents in Alexandria.

Animal Control officers in Alexandria deal with a variety of calls every week. Here's a glance at some recent incidents in the city courtesy of Patrick Egan of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

Too High a Perch — Sometimes it just takes a little push to get someone out of the nest.

On July 3, two Alexandria Animal Control Officers were called to the 200 block of N. Union Street to assist a stranded nest of ducklings.

A mother duck had nested on an upper-floor balcony. Despite being old enough to leave their nest, its placement several floors up prevented the ducklings to get safely to the ground.

The two officers carefully moved the nest to the ground floor of the building and the mother duck quickly led her ducklings to the water.

When Doves Go Four-Wheeling — On July 10, an Animal Control officer was called out to the 1400 block of N. Pickett Street for an issue involving a dove.

Upon arrival, the officer was informed a dove had somehow trapped itself within the rear spare tire of the caller’s SUV. The dove had been confined for some time, but appeared healthy.

It took some coaxing, but the dove was eventually freed from the tire.
