Alexandria Children's Chorus Accepting Registrations For Fall

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Alexandria Children's Chorus is returning to a regular in-person season in 2022 and is accepting fall registrations for children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Founded in 2015 as the Del Ray Kinderchoir, Alexandria Children's Chorus is the city's only children’s community chorus. The organization seeks to celebrate community through music, provide a non-competitive setting for children to develop their singing skills and inspire children to be good people.

Now the organization is hoping to build enrollment to pre-pandemic levels.

"Pre-Covid, our choruses were filled with 60 singers. I'm confident we can meet or exceed that number this fall!" said artistic director Ben Hutchens in a message to Patch.

Hutchens, who has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting, was artistic director from 2018 to 2020 and returned in 2022. He has taught music to children for 20 years and also directs the choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria. Other conductors teaching the children will be Jacquelynne Fontaine and Elizabeth Kluegel, who have experience in performing and teaching music.

Rehearsals will happen Tuesday afternoons at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2701 Cameron Mills Road, Alexandria, VA. Children will typically be divided by age for their music instruction. Staff are vaccinated against COVID-19, and participants are encouraged to be vaccinated.

Fall tuition for the Alexandria Children's Chorus is $375, but scholarships are available based on financial need.
