Driver Charged in Fatal Pedestrian Crash in Alexandria: Police

Police say the driver, 77, stopped after the crash last Thursday in Alexandria; pedestrian suffered injuries and later died, police said.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- The driver involved in last Thursday's pedestrian crash at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue and W. Glebe Road was arrested and released on summons the evening of the crash, the Alexandria City Police Department announced Monday. The pedestrian, Rosemarie Cruz, 49, of Alexandria, died from injuries sustained in the crash, police announced Sunday.

Karin Sheire, 77, of Montana, was charged with Failed to Yield to Pedestrians, police said Monday.

Members of the Crash Reconstruction Team are investigating the incident and will determine any additional charges in consultation with the Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

An online fundraiser was started for Cruz, a wife and mother of four children. The fundraising goal is $100,000 and so far nearly $30,000 has been raised by Monday night, by 392 donors. Cruz was a familiar face around Alexandria, working at Del Ray restaurants.

More fundraising is planned, according to a report by NBC-4: All proceeds from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 13 at three Del Ray restaurants -- Market 2 Market, St. Elmo's and Pork Barrel BBQ -- will go to Cruz's two youngest children.
