Gas In Alexandria: Prices Range from $2.24 to $2.83 Per Gallon

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Have you noticed gas prices creeping up when you're filling up your car? It's not your imagination. AAA reports that the average price for a gallon of gas, $2.37, is 16 cents higher Tuesday than it was a month ago. Last year, the average price per gallon was $1.97. Retail gasoline prices have increased 41 of the past 43 days in response to oil markets, AAA said.

Some gas stations are charging even more than that in the Alexandria area according to Gas Buddy, a Web site that tracks gas prices. Tuesday morning, the site reported that the Exxon gas station at 4001 Mt. Vernon Avenue was charging $2.83 per gallon and the Shell station at 3216 Jefferson Davis Highway was charging $2.69 per gallon.

Those prices are quite a bit higher than the cheapest gas you can find in the Alexandria area, about $2.24 to $2.25 a gallon.

The average cost for regular, unleaded gas is expected to spike to $2.49 per gallon this year, up from $2.13 in 2016, USA Today reported. The chief reason for the price increases? A decision in November by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to pare back oil production, and the group’s subsequent success in convincing Russia and several other major oil producers to do the same, the newspaper reported. On Tuesday, a barrel of benchmark U.S. crude closed at $52.49, down $1.24 a barrel or 2.31 percent.

• $2.24 per gallon: 700 S. Patrick at Liberty
• $2.25 per gallon: 4808 King St. at Speedway
• $2.25 per gallon: 4368 King St. at Liberty
