Winner in Virginia's Attorney General Race, But By How Many Votes?

State Sen. Mark Herring (D-Loudoun) has been elected Virginia's next Attorney General, according to results certified by the Virginia State Board of Elections on Monday, according to The Washington Post.

The difference? Just 165 votes out of more than 2 million, with Herring finishing at 1,103,777 votes and state Sen. Mark Obenshain finishing with 1,103,612.

“I am gratified that the State Board of Elections today certified me the winner of a close but fair election,” Herring said in a statement. “I look forward to serving the people of Virginia as Attorney General.”

Next up is a likely recount. Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) has 10 days to decide whether to challenge the results. "Over the next few days, we will continue to review these results. Margins this small are why Virginia law provides a process for a recount," campaign manager Chris Leavitt told The Huffington Post.
