South County High School Wins Bronze Medal at Stotesbury Cup Regatta

Lorton-based crew club is only Fairfax County Public School team to medal at the largest high school regatta in the world

The South County High School Rowing team placed third in the Girls Junior Eight category at the 96th Annual Stotesbury Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, May 20. The 2023 Stotesbury Regatta, produced by the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, is the largest high school regatta in the world. At this year’s race, 184 schools were represented, and 4,274 athletes competed in 896 boats across 31 events.

South County High School’s Girls Junior Eight team placed second out of 41 boats in their time trials and second in their semi-final before competing in the final race for the Dee Campbell Trophy against teams from Mt. St. Joseph Academy, Flourtown, PA; Montclair High School, Montclair, NJ; Nardin Academy, Buffalo, NY; Atlantic City High School, Atlantic City, NJ; and Villa Joseph Marie High School, Holland, PA. The team secured third place after rowing 1500 meters and crossing the finish line with a time of 5:19:48. Thirteen Fairfax County Public School crew teams participated in the regatta, but South County High School was the only one to bring home a medal.

The South County Boys Junior Eight team placed seventh out of 48 boats in their time trials and second in their afternoon semi-final. The team competed against five private schools including: St. Josephs Prep, Philadelphia, PA; Canisius High School, Buffalo, NY; Gonzaga College High School, Washington, DC; Seton Hall Prep, West Orange, NJ; and Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, NJ. Despite placing sixth in the final race for the Charlie Butt Trophy, they rowed their personal best time of the season, crossing the finish line at 4:45:71.

At the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championship held May 13 on the Occoquan River at Sandy Run Regional Park in Fairfax Station, South County High School’s Girls Junior Eight team and Boys Junior Eight team both won first place and the Girls Junior Four team placed second. These three teams will be representing South County High School and Fairfax County Public Schools while competing in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship Regatta (SRAA®) May 26 – 27 at Melton Hill Lake, Oak Ridge, TN.
